About the Business
Malcolm Sutcliffe was born in England in 1954 and is married with two children. He went to Birmingham Polytechnic to study ceramics back in 1973 and was so drawn to the glass facility there that he changed direction and studied glass full time. After finishing the course at Birmingham Polytechnic he set up his first studio at Winyates Crafts Centre, Redditch. During this time Malcolm was also employed as a visiting lecturer at Bristol Polytechnic and Stourbridge College of Art and Technology. He then spent a few years working at a glass studio in Cambridge before moving to Chesterfield and setting up Hothouse along with two other glassblowers, Paul Barcroft and Anthony Wassell. From 1991 to 2001 Malcolm ran his own studio in Chesterfield with the assistance of his wife Jean. In November 2001, after a lot of searching, Malcolm and Jean moved the glass studio to a disused bakery in the historic old town of Penryn in Cornwall.
